Workshop Overview

A lot of organisations use appraisals, but not all organisations use them effectively. There can be the tendency to rush through the process, avoiding difficult conversations and not tackling issues of under-performance. In this workshop, we will look at ways of making effective use of the appraisal process.

Kathy Daniels

Kathy Daniels FCIPD, FCMI, PFHEA specialises in employment law, writing for a range of sources and also speaking and training across the UK. She is also a Professor at Aston University where she is Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor (Engagement). She is a lay member of the Employment Tribunals, sitting in Birmingham and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

  • Preparing for an appraisal meeting – what should you be doing?
  • Listening and encouraging the employee to open up about any concerns they might have.
  • The preparation you should ask the employee to do for the meeting.
  • How to set targets and objectives.
  • Linking appraisals to pay (or not).
  • 360 degree appraisals and using feedback from others.
  • Practical tips on managing difficult conversations.
  • How to deal with emotional appraisals.
  • Reviewing performance outside the appraisal meeting.
